Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and has struggled with political violence throughout most of its history. Devastating storms in 2008 caused severe losses and extra pressure on transportation and agriculture. Since two-thirds of Haitians are small-scale farmers, natural disasters and widespread deforestation have contributed to the loss of food, income, and children being uprooted from school. Lack of food also leads to low nutrition, especially among children.

Outreach International is currently supporting a network of 90 schools, serving more than 9,000 students. Without this support, these students would likely not receive any education, as school fees, transportation and uniforms are too expensive.

The sponsored schools continue to function in spite of political upheavals and natural disasters. Following the disasters, schools have received repairs and students have received books and uniforms. A nutrition program also offers food for about 10% of the students who might otherwise not receive a meal at home.

Helping children become literate and have an educational grounding is a sure way to contribute to the success of future generations. Outreach International is helping them create new futures for themselves and their communities.
